Nearly all car crashes are due to human error

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, 37,461 lives were lost on U.S. roads in 2016. And 94 percent of vehicle crashes are due to “human error.” NHTSA estimates that vehicle safety developments helped raise the annual number of lives saved from 115 in 1960 to 27,621 in 2012. Cumulatively, these improved safety technologies saved over 600,000 lives between 1960 and 2012.

As we are moving toward full automation, there has been a lot of development in driver assistance. This is where a vehicle is controlled by the driver, but there are some driving assistance options like collision…

Satellite internet service has been around for a while. Lately, there has been a frenzy for satellite internet service. A number of high tech luminaries like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have jumped into the fray of satellite internet service.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has now launched 955 Starlink satellites, of which 895 are in orbit. His company has started a beta test of the broadband internet service provided by those satellites in the northern U.S. and southern Canada.

His rival Jeff Bezos is building up a system comprising 3,236 satellites called the Kuiper System and it will deliver high-throughput, low-latency…

Edge Computing Is So Much More Fun — Part 2.

This is the second in a series of articles on edge computing, delving into the infrastructure of outdoor edge computing, the emergence of the Roadside Unit as a common building block, a real-life example of the Roadside Unit, and the way forward. You can read part 1 here.

You probably walk past it or drive past it every day. But it is inconspicuous for most people. And it is evolving and becoming more intelligent. More importantly, it is becoming the common building block for outdoor edge computing applications ranging from smart city, traffic management, and V2X (Vehicle To Everything) for…

Lessons Learned From Covid-19 Part 3.

The great lockdown has helped to slow the spread of Covid-19. But it also came at a great cost to the global economy. Unlike a recession, many nonessential businesses have been closed with no clear timetable to reopen. The initial jobless claims in the US have swelled to more than 26 million since mid-March. While we see some glimmers of hope, we are not out of the woods yet. Businesses are anxious to reopen but we are also concerned with the health risks associated with it. …

Edge Computing Is So Much More Fun — Part 1.

Cloud computing has been very boring for a long time. Everything is inside the data center and you don’t even see the systems that you are working on. But not anymore. With Edge Computing, the server is no longer confined to inside the data center. It is out there touching our daily life and computing is happening in real-world and real-time.

Unlike the servers inside the data center which never see the sunlight, edge computers can be covered in snow or exposed to scorching heat in the middle of a desert.

With COVID-19, my vacation plan got canceled. Out of boredom, I started looking at travel videos on YouTube. And I came across this documentary video. It was so intriguing that I ended up watching the entire video. The video is about Jim and Jamie Dutcher’s adventure living with the wolves to study and understand the behavior and social hierarchy of a pack of gray wolves which they called the Sawtooth pack.

With a forest service permit, Jim and his wife Jamie lived in a tented camp near Idaho’s Sawtooth Wilderness. For six years, they documented the social hierarchy and behavior…

Lessons Learned From Covid-19 Part 2.

Source: The Economist

As the coronavirus continued to spread around the world, there is a lot of uncertainty as to how and when the epidemic is going to end. However, it is already causing major disruptions to our daily lives: people are working from home, schools are closed, the NBA suspended its season and the list goes on.

To make it worse, people are hoarding. In response to the run on certain items such as toilet paper and hand sanitizer, major retailers have imposed some purchase limits.

It is hard to predict how the coronavirus epidemic will end. As more countries are on…
